Arizona’s immigration enforcement law, SB 1070, is needed to fill void left by federal government’s refusal to secure border
The Arizona immigration law, SB 1070, is pretty simple: it makes being in the United States illegally a state crime (it is already a federal crime). The goal is to reduce illegal immigration in Arizona, since Congress and the White House refuse to secure the border. What’s more, the federal government has concentrated border security in California and Texas, all but driving illegals right into Arizona through its lightly protected border.
The Arizona law could spell doom for open borders and amnesty advocates, especially since a majority of Americans support Arizona’s law. So they must bring Arizona to its knees before lawmakers or citizens elsewhere dare demand our immigration laws be enforced. Thus, the Obama Democrats are suing Arizona and leading a boycott of Arizona’s businesspeople.
The Arizona law is not perfect. Certainly, the sound goal of assisting law enforcement in detaining illegals without snaring or disturbing those here legally may require tweaks to the existing statute. But let’s not pretend opponents’ objection is to potential “profiling” when we know they support open borders, taxpayer-funded amnesty and even “sanctuary” for illegals, in direct contradiction to federal law. The Obama/Democrats’ federal lawsuit does not even argue on alleged profiling grounds, the claim is so weak. The concept of “reasonable suspicion” has been defined through decades of case law. And since Arizona does not allow illegal aliens to get driver’s licenses, anyone with a driver’s license can pretty easily demonstrate that they are in Arizona legally. By all means, let’s work to fine-tune the law, over time, to reduce the risk of error, but the spurious and exaggerated attacks on this law must be resisted with strength and resolve by the bill’s supporters across America, or these intimidation tactics by national Democrats and left-wing judges will proliferate.
In short, defending the Arizona law and defeating the Democrats’ boycott are the most important short-term measures (along with voting out Democratic lawmakers on November 2, 2010) all Americans can take to secure our border and protect our nation’s future.
